Design is all about communication. Images are visual representations of concepts such as physical objects, emotions, or ideas. Words also represent these things but they are often more definite symbols and can be conveyed aurally through speech as well as visually in writing. Together words and images become a powerful tool to communicate a message. That message can have long lasting effects in shaping the mind and actions of viewers for good or ill. The Rosie the Riveter poster is an excellent example of a strong image combined with well chosen words. It has become a cultural icon and is a major symbol of the feminist movement. Simply put, image plus word equals graphic design.
